Welcome to the Master Degree Program

Human Reproduction

of the Department of Medicine of the Democritus University of Thrace.

The Master Degree Program “Human Reproduction” is celebrating 12 years of continuous and successful operation.

The initiative of its establishment belongs to Prof. Nikos Nicolettos (Professor of Gynecology with specialization in In Vitro Fertilization). When, in 2013, he mentioned to me the idea of establishing a Master’s Program for Human Reproduction and asked me to assist in its establishment, I was hesitant because this project was large and difficult. The goal was not to establish “another Master among so many others” but to structure it in such a way that it provides, in a short period of time, comprehensive knowledge on the Physiology and Pathophysiology of the reproductive system and at the same time to provide sufficient knowledge in the field of Assisted Reproduction, with an emphasis on the practical-laboratory training of students. As at that time we had both almost finished our training abroad, we had the desire to transmit all this knowledge that we had acquired in different University and private centers abroad in an easy way and in a relatively short period of time to our young Greek colleagues who are already active, or intend to be active, in the field of Assisted Reproduction. The project was indeed difficult, but when the Master Degree Program was first launched, in the distant 2014, it was crowned with success.

Its success was decisively contributed by the assistance of many friends and collaborators, very important and highly experienced scientists, from the Academic field as well as the private sector, both from Greece and from European countries, who undertook, with consistency and a sense of responsibility, a large part of the teaching program. Indeed, we are very proud of the quality of the teaching staff of the Master’s Program and we feel obliged for the tireless and continuous efforts they have made.

The participation of several teachers from abroad was deemed necessary not only because of their deep knowledge of the subjects they teach but also because in this way valuable experience from other countries can be transferred to the students. Thus, while the official language of the Master’s Program is Greek, the knowledge of the English language is considered essential.

What does the Master’s Program “Human Reproduction” offer to the one who decides to follow it?
Comprehensive knowledge of the Physiology as well as the Pathophysiology of the male and female reproductive system, including knowledge of Genetics, Epigenetics, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, diagnosis and therapeutic treatment. Detailed presentation of Assisted Reproduction Treatments accompanied by laboratory training in the Democritus University facilities and practical training in Medically Assisted Reproduction Units. Extensive knowledge regarding issues of legislation, psychology, bioethics and demography. Training regarding the design and implementation of scientific studies. Here, it must be emphasized that an integral part of the Master’s program is the preparation and writing of a scientific paper, in the form of a thesis.

Therefore, if you work or if you intend to work in the field of Assisted Reproduction, or if you wish to engage in research in a scientific field related to Human Reproduction, this Master’s Program will provide you valuable and useful knowledge. What the Master’s Program asks from you is study, consistency and questions. All teachers will gladly discuss any of your questions and concerns regarding any issue of Human Reproduction.

The Master’s Program “Human Reproduction” is waiting for you!
